]Jimi Lives! December 13, 2005 By AJ (US)
I've been a Hendrix fan for over 30 years, since my older sister gave me Band of Gypsies, my first LP. As a teenager, I built a vinyl collection of over 30 domestics, imports and bootlegs, trying to find any alternate take or live track available. As anyone who has gone this route knows, there were plenty of scams / duds promising far more than delivered, with either very poor recording quality or uninspired performances.......this is not one of them. WITHOUT QUESTION, THIS IS THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION OF LIVE MATERIAL; the sound quality is superb, and the playing is incredibly unique. "The Jimi Hendrix Concerts" features 12 songs, including 6 tracks from the 3 day Winterland series, as well as Albert Hall (2) , Berkeley, New York Pop, San Diego and the LA Forum. Red House is stunning......you will listen to it over and over. Stone Free features an extended jam with Jimi throwing in flamenco licks. For those of us who appreciate Jimi's love of the blues, there are wonderful versions of Hear My Train, Bleeding Heart and Hey Joe, in addition to Red House. Are You Experienced is as psychedelic as could be hoped for, yet clean. An unexpected inclusion is the tranquil Little Wing. The only thing missing is Purple Haze. Unfortunately, the CD of this album is now difficult to find, probably due to legal issues between Alan Douglas and Jimi's estate. I agree with another reviewer...... Grab this if you can find it! You will end up burning copies for all of your friends!
Review by Stephen Cook
Out of several live Hendrix albums, The Jimi Hendrix Concerts stands as one of the very best. Taken from shows at Winterland, The Royal Albert Hall, and from various venues in New York, Berkeley, and San Diego, the set includes hits like "Fire," "Voodoo Chile," and "Hey Joe," as well as fine blues like "Red House," "Bleeding Heart," and "Hear My Train a Comin'." Highlights include a definitive version of "Little Wing" and one of the most assured and driving versions of "Voodoo Chile" (these and four other stellar tracks come from what must have been an amazing concert at Winterland in the fall of '68). Another standout is "I Don't Live Today," which features a fine mix of jazz-inspired soloing and various feedback and distortion "tricks" (tricks that figure into Hendrix's way of "playing with the electronics," and which make up one of the more innovative aspects of his guitar playing). Hendrix gets adept and sympathetic support throughout from bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell (Band of Gypsies' bassist Billy Cox replaces Redding on "Red House" and "Hey Joe"). With top-notch performances, consistently inspired solos, and excellent sound, this is probably the best introduction to Hendrix's live recordings.
