Well, what can I say; it’s another CD full of Danish beat. Don’t confuse this with the Norwegian band The Vanguards sporting a young Terje Rypdal on guitar, I uploaded a twofer with them a while back. And just for your information, Terje played solo’s with his guitar behind his back way before anyone else. That was today’s bit of totally useless and patriotic musical trivia.
The Vanguards were among the best beat bands in Denmark, although you’d think they lived too far away from the capitol and major cities to have a major nationwide breakthrough. The title, “Beat On The Rocks”, is a pun on the fact that the band came from the small and rocky island of Bornholm. They won a few of the “battle of the bands” type of contests and were soon one of the most popular live-bands nationwide.
Since the mastertapes have been long lost all the songs are needledrops, lifted from as clean vinyl as possible. Musically speaking, the tracklist gives away most of the story. (Which is my way of saying that I’m too freakin’ lazy to write a long and tedious review of each and every song. ) Mostly covers, but some pretty cool original songs too. Some of you might know “Prinsesse Toben” from the version The Scarlets did, but The Vanguards version ain’t too bad either.
Released by Frost Records, so like always there’s a cool booklet with colour photography and great liner notes.
