The Byrds - The Columbia Singles Collection '65 - '67 (2002)

Sundazed Vinyl

"When “Mr. Tambourine Man” first rumbled out of car radio speakers in 1965,
it was a pivotal moment in pop history.
With its jangling 12-string and epic sweep, it was the dawn of a new day:
the birth of folk-rock. And the Byrds were just getting started.
The next two years saw one hit after another, from the Biblical prophesies
of “Turn, Turn, Turn” to the raga-rock of “Eight Miles High,”
from the exotic orchestration of “So You Want To Be A Rock ‘N’ Roll Star”
to the Byrds bringing it all back home with “My Back Pages.”
Here they are again, 30 landmark recordings in their perfectly constructed,
radio-friendly mono mixes: the forgotten rarities, withdrawn singles and,
of course, all the original A and B-sides.
No one has ever had a stronger run of singles than did the Byrds in their prime.
No one."

The Byrds - Greatest Hits (1967)

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The 12-string electric guitar may never recover. As long as there are baby boomers roaming the earth, its airy jangle will signify psychedelic innocence and optimism refracted through the peculiar light of mid-'60s Los Angeles. With Roger McGuinn leading, the Byrds kicked off American rock history with a merger of Bob Dylan's words and the Beatles' melodic energy. The results are here: "Mr. Tambourine Man," "The Bells of Rhymney," and "Eight Miles High" still jump off the airwaves. The midpoint between Dylan and the Beatles is a one-of-a-kind place, where optimism and innocence still sound smart. --Steve Tignor

The Byrds - The Notorious Byrd Brothers (1968)

The Byrds - The Notorious Byrd Brothers (1968)

Artist: The Byrds
Album: The Notorious Byrd Brothers
Released: 1968
Genre: Psychedelic Rock

1968's Notarious Byrd Brothers opened wit a devastating
one two punch: ahorn section marvel bemoaning the go fast culture:
and a baroque pop masterpiece that floated to heaven on wisps
of pedal steel and harpsichord.
The trenchant songwriting-answering recant works by the Beatles and Stones
-tackled subject as diverse as the agony of the Vietnam war
and the exploration of deep space on an album many people regard
as the Byrds best. (sleeve note)

Review by Richie Unterberger

The recording sessions for the Byrds' fifth album, The Notorious
Byrd Brothers, were conducted in the midst of internal turmoil
that found them reduced to a duo by the time the record was completed.
That wasn't evident from listening to the results, which showed
the group continuing to expand the parameters of their eclecticism
while retaining their hallmark guitar jangle and harmonies.
With assistance from producer Gary Usher, they took more chances
in the studio, enhancing the spacy quality of tracks
like "Natural Harmony" and Goffin & King's "Wasn't Born to Follow"
with electronic phasing. Washes of Moog synthesizer formed the eerie
backdrop for "Space Odyssey," and the songs were craftily and
unobtrusively linked with segues and fades. But the Byrds did not
bury the essential strengths of their tunes in effects: "Goin' Back"
(also written by Goffin & King) was a magnificent and melodic cover
with the expected tasteful 12-string guitar runs that should have been a big hit.
"Tribal Gathering" has some of the band's most effervescent harmonies;
"Draft Morning" is a subtle and effective reflection of the horrors of
the Vietnam War; and "Old John Robertson" looks forward to the
country-rock that would soon dominate their repertoire.
[The CD reissue adds six bonus tracks, including different versions
of "Goin' Back" and "Draft Morning," a few instrumentals, and David Crosby's
controversial "Triad"; unlisted on the sleeve is a rehearsal outtake which
captures comically vitriolic arguments among the band.]

The Byrds - There Is A Season (2006)

The Byrds - There Is A Season (2006)

A newcomer to the musical progression and legacy of the Byrds could hardly expect to find a better crash course than this: four discs with 99 songs, a DVD of ten previously unissued television performances, extensive annotation. Yet longtime fans of the band might wonder what the point is. Any riches buried in the vaults have long ago been mined--first in 1990's definitive four-disc Byrds box, then on Columbia's series of extended editions of every Byrds album in the catalog, replete with previously unreleased bonus tracks. By this late date, all possible revelations have been revealed, with the five previously unissued performances here of interest mainly to completists. The familiar music is glorious, of course--the chiming guitars and soaring harmonies that brought Bob Dylan and folk-rock to the top of the charts and then soared into the stratosphere with "Eight Miles High" and all but invented country-rock with Sweetheart of the Rodeo. Yet except for the DVD, anyone who wants this much Byrds probably already has most of it. --Don McLeese

The Byrds - Younger Than Yesterday (1967)

The Byrds - Younger Than Yesterday (1967)

Younger Than Yesterday was somewhat overlooked at the time of its release during an intensely competitive era that found the Byrds on a commercial downslide. However, time has shown it to be the most durable of the Byrds' albums, with the exception of Mr. Tambourine Man. David Crosby, Roger McGuinn, and especially Chris Hillman come into their own as songwriters on an eclectic but focused set blending folk-rock, psychedelia, and early country-rock. The sardonic "So You Want to Be a Rock & Roll Star" was a terrific single; "My Back Pages," also a small hit, was the last of their classic Dylan covers; "Thoughts and Words," the flower-power anthem "Renaissance Fair," "Have You Seen Her Face," and the bluegrass-tinged "Time Between" are all among their best songs. The jazzy "Everybody's Been Burned" may be Crosby's best composition, although his "Mind Gardens" is one of his most excessive. [The CD reissue has six bonus tracks, including the fine Crosby-penned single "Lady Friend," and notably different alternate versions of "Mind Gardens" and "My Back Pages."

The Byrds - Turn! Turn! Turn! (1965)

Arriving just months after the folk-rock call to arms of their brilliant debut, the Byrds' second album closely follows the same formula, but what a formula: durable American folksongs (from Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, and even Stephen Foster) and their own strong originals are laced with the band's keening vocal harmonies and chiming guitars in a mix since institutionalized as a perennial rock dialect. With Seeger's classic title song, the Byrds brought Ecclesiastes onto the charts, importing the urban folk movement's social and political consciousness to the pop mainstream. If the album couldn't repeat the revelatory impact of its predecessor, it's still an earful, from Gene Clark's urgent, ardent "It Won't Be Wrong" to Dylan's contemplative "Lay Down Your Weary Tune." Meticulously remastered, this restored version also boasts unreleased tracks and B-sides, including "She Don't Care About Time," noteworthy for a 12-string solo lifted from Bach. --Sam Sutherland

The Byrds - Fifth Dimension (1966)

The Byrds - Fifth Dimension (1966)

Having already pioneered folk-rock via their electrified versions of Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger songs such as "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Turn Turn Turn," the Byrds helped midwife yet another new musical form in 1966 on this, their third album. Influenced by Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar and jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, Jim McGuinn's atonal 12-string guitar on the suitably titled "Eight Miles High" was a psychedelic omen of things to come. Pointing in other new directions, too, are the prescient country-rock tune, "Mr. Spaceman," string-aided updates of folk evergreens "Wild Mountain Thyme" and "John Riley," and David Crosby's fusion-y "I See You" and "What's Happening?!?!" On this album, plenty. --Billy Altman

The Byrds - Preflyte (1964)

The Byrds - Preflyte (1964)

A blip in the Byrds' discography that could easily be missed, as all of the songs from these pre-Mr. Tambourine Man sessions are also found on the much more widely available In the Beginning. Byrds fans really need to track this down, though, because six of the 11 cuts are actually entirely different versions than the ones that appear on In the Beginning, and in some cases the differences are substantial. "You Showed Me," in particular, appears here in a bare-bones, almost acoustic version with a heart-wrenching Gene Clark vocal; this is the sound of the Byrds at their very birth in the nest. It's a matter of taste, but to my ears the takes of "She Has a Way" and "Here Without You" on Preflyte are clearly superior to the ones used on In the Beginning, though the arrangements are very similar. Originally released on the small Together label, this was reissued on Columbia a few years later; the Columbia pressing is much easier to find, can still be easily (and affordably) found in used stores, and has enough otherwise unavailable quality material to make the search worth the effort.
